The full description
**Macro** Software Engineer; $160K-$300K + equity; New York, NY (On-site)
**About Company** Macro is building a unified, open-source workspace that combines email, docs, tasks, and team collaboration into a single system, replacing the patchwork of tools (Slack, Notion, Linear, and similar) most startups end up piecing together. The product serves two personas: individuals replacing tools like Superhuman or Notion, and early-stage NYC/SF startups using Macro as their company operating system.
Founded in 2020, Macro is backed by a16z (Series A) and other investors. The team is roughly 15-16 people, primarily engineers (many hired out of the Recurse Center in Brooklyn), based out of Flatiron, NYC, with a small Toronto engineering presence. Macro runs its own company operations entirely on its own product.
**About the Role** This generalist track is for smart, versatile engineers without needing an exact skill-set match
**Responsibilities** - Build across Macro's unified workspace product spanning email, docs, tasks, and collaboration. - Work in TypeScript and/or Rust - the specific language matters less than demonstrated engineering depth and care (Rust experience is a strong positive signal of genuine passion). - Collaborate closely with a small, product-focused engineering team in the NYC office. - Take ownership of features end-to-end in a fast-moving, in-person startup environment.
**Required Skills** A. Demonstrated engineering strength via personal projects - a genuine (not over-designed) personal website, a GitHub showing real interest-driven projects, and/or publicly written technical opinions. B. Genuine, demonstrable interest in computer science/software engineering as a craft, not just a job. C. Comfortable as a generalist - not tied to one exact skill-set, but a strong, versatile engineer with relevant production experience.
**Bonus Skills** - Rust experience specifically (per the CTO, correlates strongly with genuine engineering passion/care). - Experience with SolidJS (Macro's core stack). - Background at companies with engineering cultures the CTO respects: Linear, Ramp, Attio, Notion, Figma, Cloudflare, or similar.
**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City, fully in-person, 5 days/week (not hybrid). - Compensation: $160K-$300K base + equity, scaling with experience (early-career engineers with professional production experience up to ~12 YOE senior engineers).
**Ideal Background** - Open on experience level when candidates show professional production tenure beyond internships and short founding stints; exceptional 0 YOE candidates have been hired. - No degree required - CTO evaluates competence directly through conversation and the work trial. - A simple, tasteful personal website is a strong positive signal; an over-designed/AI-vibe-coded site (flashy 3D elements, gimmicks) is a negative one. - GitHub should show genuine-interest projects (e.g. forking niche libraries relevant to real technical curiosity) rather than bootcamp/tutorial clones - the latter reads as a red flag, not neutral. - Companies the CTO respects: Linear, Ramp, Attio, Notion, Figma, Cloudflare, and similarly rigorous engineering cultures (no strong opinion on school/degree).
**Green Flags** - Strong personal projects and a visible technical voice online (blog, GitHub, personal site). - Genuine passion for computer science as a craft, not just a resume line. - Comfortable with an unconventional, conversational interview style rather than standard coding-question formats. - Long stretches with modern/exciting tech stacks and concrete, specific resume language (not vague corporate jargon).
**Red Flags** - "Mercenary" pattern - multiple past startup jobs with no visible personal projects, writing, or online presence suggesting genuine engineering interest. - Long stretches on stale/unexciting tech stacks (e.g. years on legacy PHP/jQuery) without progression. - Vague, jargon-heavy resume bullets that don't say anything concrete. - Over-designed, gimmicky personal websites (AI-vibe-coded, all flash no substance). - Purely infra-focused background (e.g. Kubernetes/platform-only work) with little generalist or front-end overlap. - Currently at, or recently graduated from, the Recurse Center - HARD EXCLUSION per Teo (9/2026): client has a separate direct arrangement with Recurse and cannot overlap with it. Do not submit Recurse alumni/current batch members, even though Macro's own team is heavily Recurse-pedigreed. - Personal site or portfolio link that's down, broken, or inaccessible when reviewed. - Recurse Center alumni - client has a separate, direct arrangement with Recurse Center and does not want overlapping candidates sourced through Squad.
**Interview Process** 1. Phone screen with CTO Teo Nys. 2. On-site in the NY office - conversational rather than coding-question-driven; Teo probes into past projects to assess depth and technical judgment. 3. [Optional] Paid work trial (2-5 days, ideally a full week) - $3,000 for a 5-day trial, pro-rated for shorter engagements. Only when deemed necessary and possible
