The full description
**Torch** Senior Full-Stack Engineer (RCM); $180K–$230K base + equity; New York City (Hybrid)
**About Company** Torch (Torch Dental) gives independent dental practices a single platform to run their business. Torch Marketplace lets 3,000+ practices order from 100,000+ products across 25+ vendors in one place, pools their collective buying power for wholesale-level pricing (16%+ average savings, some practices saving up to 32%), and uses AI to manage inventory, budgets, and spend — cutting time spent ordering by 64%.
Building on that base, Torch is launching an AI-powered Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) product: agentic software that automates the manual claims and insurance work practices currently handle by phone and by hand, going live in Q4 2026 and scaling through 2027. The long-term roadmap adds patient payments, payroll, and bookkeeping as Torch builds toward becoming the full operating system for dental practices, with international expansion also on the table.
The engineering and product team is based in New York (Flatiron) and works hands-on with agentic AI and platform-engineering tools as they build out the RCM product.
**About the Role** This is the single, P0 engineering hire for Torch's new AI Revenue Cycle Management product — a senior (or junior staff) full-stack engineer with strong front-end chops who will own a large slice of the product surface area as RCM launches in Q4 2026 and scales through 2027, working closely with the team's senior PM and reporting to the Director of Engineering for RCM.
**Responsibilities** - Own significant product surface area on the AI RCM product — from user experience to technical performance — as Torch prepares to launch in Q4 2026. - Build end-to-end features across the stack (React/TypeScript front end plus backend services) that power agentic workflows for insurance claims, payer communication, and reconciliation. - Partner closely with the team's senior product manager to shape product decisions and translate user needs into shipped features. - Work directly with an embedded senior billing coordinator (subject-matter expert) sitting with the team to ground the product in real dental billing workflows. - Use AI-native tooling (the team runs on Claude Code at minimum, with some engineers building custom agentic workflows) to increase velocity. - Collaborate with the Director of Engineering and 5 other engineers on the RCM team as the product scales through 2027.
**Required Skills** A. 5–10 years of hands-on, full-stack engineering experience with strong front-end competency in React and TypeScript. B. Demonstrated product-minded engineering - a track record of owning user-facing features end-to-end, not just executing tickets. C. Experience in startup or growth-stage environments (roughly 50–1,000 employees) showing resourcefulness and high ownership; primarily large-company backgrounds are a weaker fit here.
**Bonus Skills** - Prior experience in healthcare, fintech, or another regulated / operationally complex domain. - Experience building or working alongside agentic AI workflows in production. - Founding engineer or early-stage (pre-Series B) startup experience.
**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City - Flatiron office (23rd & 5th Ave). Hybrid: in-office Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. - Compensation: $180K–$230K base + equity. - Number of openings: 1 - **Other:** Full benefits covered. Equity grant valued between roughly a quarter and half a million dollars.
**Ideal Background** - Top-50 CS program (or equivalent) combined with a strong track record of promotions within engineering orgs (e.g., SWE1→SWE2→Senior, or Engineer→Senior→Staff). - Startup/growth-stage trajectory in the 50–1,000-employee range; founding-engineer experience is a strong plus. - Adjacent-domain experience (healthcare, fintech, or other operationally heavy verticals) is a nice-to-have, not required. - A recent layoff is not treated as a red flag by this client — viewed as circumstantial rather than a signal on the candidate. - Comp note: true ceiling is ~$230K base for an exceptional profile; candidates well above that are likely a stretch.
**Green Flags** - Demonstrated product ownership — has shipped user-facing features end-to-end and can speak to the "why," not just the "how." - Strong front-end craft (React/TypeScript) paired with genuine full-stack comfort. - Curiosity about AI-native tooling and at least baseline usage (team uses Claude Code at minimum). - Comes from a lean, resourceful team environment with high individual surface area.
**Red Flags** - Career spent primarily at large, established organizations with narrow scope — may struggle with startup pace/ambiguity. - Backend-only or design-only profile without real front-end ownership. - Comp expectations meaningfully above $230K base — above the ceiling for this role.
**Interview Process** 1. Behavioral screen (~30–45 min) with Khaled Boukadoum, Co-Founder — background, past responsibilities, motivations. 2. Technical interview with an engineer on the team (likely the Director of Engineering) — live technical exercise. 3. Onsite (~3 hours) at the Flatiron office — mix of technical exercises and behavioral conversations.
