The full description
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with 6+ years of experience to own the architecture and data systems that will scale Waystation's AI-powered procurement platform. You'll be the go-to person for schema design, data migrations, and queuing infrastructure while also building customer-facing product ~40-50% of the time on a small, fast-moving team chasing product-market fit.
What will you be doing?
- Architecting backend systems — schema design, API standards, and large data migrations on live customer data
- Implementing queuing technology to move from direct database writes to scalable async processing as volume grows
- Setting patterns and guiding other engineers on system design and architecture decisions
- Building customer-facing product features ~40-50% of the time, shipping fast and iterating based on customer feedback
- Using AI tools (Claude Code, agentic coding workflows) daily to accelerate development
Key Requirements
- 6+ years of production software experience with depth in backend/data systems (schema design, migrations, queues, APIs)
- 2+ years at a startup (ideally Series A or earlier) — must be comfortable with ambiguity, moving fast, and throwing away code to test ideas
- Can articulate the customer problems you solved, not just the technology you used — strong written and verbal communication skills
- AI-native workflow: using agentic coding tools daily (loops, git trees, orchestrating agents) — not just autocomplete
- B2B application experience with some exposure to unstructured data or scaling challenges
