The full description
**Macro** Sales Executive; $180K-$250K OTE ($90K-$125K base + 50% variable); New York, NY (Hybrid)
**About Company** Macro is building a unified, open-source workspace that combines email, docs, tasks, and team collaboration into a single system, replacing the patchwork of tools (Slack, Notion, Linear, and similar) most startups end up piecing together. The product serves two personas: individuals replacing tools like Superhuman or Notion, and early-stage NYC/SF startups using Macro as their company operating system.
Founded in 2020, Macro is backed by a16z (Series A) and other investors. The team is roughly 15-16 people, primarily engineers (many hired out of the Recurse Center in Brooklyn), based out of Flatiron, NYC, with a small Toronto engineering presence. Macro runs its own company operations entirely on its own product.
**About the Role** This is Macro's first dedicated sales hire, a blend of inbound sales-assist (converting and warming up the dozens-to-hundreds of daily product signups, many from corporate domains) and outbound network sales (in-person community building, events, and relationship-driven pipeline in the NYC startup scene). The person will work directly with the founders to help define Macro's early sales process, messaging, and ICP, with the company aiming to grow this function to roughly 5 people across New York and San Francisco within the next year.
**Responsibilities** - Help plan and host Macro community events (happy hours, product nights, meetups) to build community and generate leads, with budget and creative freedom to shape the calendar. - Build and maintain an active, visible presence on social media, especially X, representing Macro publicly. - Represent Macro at industry events, meetups, and conferences to build the company's network. - Own outbound prospecting and pipeline generation via email, LinkedIn, and other channels. - Partner with founders/leadership to shape the early sales process, messaging, and ideal customer profile. - Gather and relay customer feedback to product and marketing. - Close deals sourced from both outbound and community-driven pipeline.
**Required Skills** A. Comfortable and consistently active on social media (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Instagram, or similar) with an existing personal presence or clear ability to build one. B. Based in or willing to be in New York City on an ongoing, regular basis. C. Available and willing to attend industry events regularly, including some evenings and weekends. D. 0-3 years of professional experience, open to strong new graduates as well as candidates with early startup/sales exposure.
**Bonus Skills** - Familiar with and genuinely excited about the current AI/tech landscape (e.g. Anthropic, OpenAI, open-source models). - Prior experience at a startup.
**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City (Flatiron). Macro is primarily in-person, but open to a flexible/hybrid schedule given the amount of in-person networking and event travel expected. - Compensation: $180K-$250K OTE, split 50/50 base/variable ($90K-$125K base), varies based on years of experience. - Number of openings: 1 (first sales hire; company aims to grow this function to roughly 5 people across NY/SF within the year). - **Other:** Dedicated budget for planning and hosting community events. No visa sponsorship available for this role - candidates must have current US work authorization.
**Ideal Background** - Comfortable operating with very little established process, this is a brand-new function with no set quota yet (per founder), so candidates need to be able to build their own playbook. - Genuine interest in tech, startups, and the broader creative/art scene resonates with Macro's culture (several early engineering hires have MFAs alongside Rust experience). - Comp note: confirmed 50/50 base/variable split - $90K-$125K guaranteed base, remainder is commission/variable at target.
**Green Flags** - Extroverted, high-agency, proactively organizes and shows up to events/meetups without needing direction. - Terminally online / plugged into the startup and AI scene (knows what's trending day to day). - Excited to build a sales process and ICP from scratch rather than needing an established playbook.
**Red Flags** - Needs a highly structured, quota-driven environment with an established process already in place. - Not willing to work some evenings/weekends for events. - Requires visa sponsorship - not available for this role, candidates must already have US work authorization.
**Interview Process** 1. One flexible interview (online or in-person — Macro confirmed Aug 7 these are the same interview, candidate's choice) with the founder covering background, motivations, and startup appetite, including an informal discussion (e.g. over a game of pool) to gauge conversational ability and curiosity. 2. Candidate reviews Macro's product and pitches it back, assessed on understanding of the competitive landscape.
