The full description
**GC AI** Member of Technical Staff, Product Engineering; $250K–$350K + equity; US/Canada (Remote, Hybrid Tue–Thu near hubs)
**About Company** GC AI is the fastest-growing legal AI platform for in-house legal teams, helping lawyers draft, review, and analyze legal documents in seconds with accuracy built for real legal work. More than 1,800 companies use GC AI, including 150+ public companies and 25+ unicorns — brands like News Corp, Miro, Bass Pro Shops, Snyk, Skims, Liquid Death, Vercel, Zscaler, and TIME. The product carries an NPS of 70-75 and recently won a #1 SaaS customer satisfaction award; sales is ahead of plan and the company is on track for a Series C.
GC AI raised a $60M Series B in November 2025 at a $555M valuation, led by Scale Venture Partners and Northzone, with Guillermo Rauch (CEO of Vercel) among the strategic investors. Co-founder and CEO Cecilia Ziniti is a 20-year legal veteran who was a founding lawyer at Amazon Alexa, then Cruise, then Replit — where she met co-founder and CTO Bardia Pourvakil and became focused on AI. About 20% of the company are lawyers, forming an R&D function that bakes legal expertise directly into the product (including attorneys who submit pull requests reviewed and shipped under engineering supervision).
The engineering team is under 20 people and doubling this year. Culture is high-performance and AI-native (the team builds with tools like Claude Code), with strong pay and equity for people who perform. The team is distributed across the US and Canada, intentionally coming together for 3-4 engineering offsites plus a company offsite each year; those within ~50 miles of the San Mateo, CA or Provo, UT hubs work in-office Tuesday-Thursday.
**About the Role** GC AI is hiring across product engineering (6 openings), with the same bar as its Applied AI and Growth roles: strong full-stack engineers from real product companies who've owned something at startup scale. You'll have end-to-end ownership of features that directly impact thousands of lawyers' daily work, architecting across GC AI's full stack (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and working directly with the founding team.
**Responsibilities** - Design and implement full-stack features that blend elegant UX with robust backend systems. - Architect scalable solutions across the stack (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and build/optimize cloud-native systems on GCP. - Own mission-critical surfaces end-to-end, from API to UI, that lawyers use daily to review, draft, and advise. - Turn customer feedback into shippable specs and ship quickly. - Raise the reliability bar — observability, testing, fallbacks — so complex AI features behave predictably in high-stakes moments. - Mentor other engineers through code review and knowledge sharing.
**Required Skills** A. 6+ years building production-grade web applications, at senior or staff level, with strong modern JavaScript/TypeScript and deep React/front-end architecture experience. B. Track record designing scalable backend systems and cloud platform experience (GCP). C. History of making architectural decisions that held up over time. D. Strong full-stack background where the whole resume is recognizable product companies, not just the current employer. One strong logo surrounded by weaker ones does not clear the bar.
**Bonus Skills** - Modern ORMs (Drizzle/Prisma) and API design experience. - DevOps practices; background building secure, compliant systems. - Familiarity with AI/LLM integrations. - Experience mentoring other engineers. - Understanding of legal tech or B2B SaaS.
**Logistical Info** - Location: Remote across the US and Canada. Hybrid — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in-office — for anyone within ~50 miles of the San Mateo, CA or Provo, UT hub offices. - Compensation: $250K–$350K + equity. - Number of openings: 6. - **Other:** H-1B transfers supported; no new visa sponsorship.
**Ideal Background** - Same calibration bar as Applied AI and Growth: strong product/enterprise companies, startup-scale ownership (not exclusively large-company backgrounds), TypeScript/React depth. - Target companies: Ramp, Notion, Stripe, Meta, Amazon, Apollo, and HeyGen. - Founders, founding engineers, and evidence of rapid promotion are strong positives; a pattern of short job stints is a red flag. - AI/LLM exposure is a plus but not required — this is GC AI's highest-volume, most general product engineering seat.
**Green Flags** - Founders and founding engineers; candidates who've made the jump from a large, well-known company to a smaller startup and taken real ownership there. - Comfortable owning a feature end-to-end from API to UI, not just front-end or back-end alone. - Currently deep in product-facing work, not looking to return to it after a stretch on platform or infrastructure.
**Red Flags** - A repeated pattern of stints under ~2 years. Four consecutive 1 to 1.5 year seats reads as a pattern to this client even with good reasons behind each one. - Purely large-company experience with no evidence of startup-scale ownership. - Primarily front-end/UI-specialist background (even senior, e.g. leading a frontend guild or driving a React migration) without genuine full-stack, end-to-end ownership — Karissa passed on a strong front-end-leaning candidate for exactly this reason ("we're too small to have really specific front end needs right now... the Product role is very full stack").
