The full description
**Outlast** Marketplace Supply — Growth Specialist; $65K–$75K base + bonus (OTE $130K–$150K); Austin, TX (On-site)
**About Company** Outlast operates a marketplace and technology platform for the scrap metal and bulk recyclables industry — a trillion-dollar market still largely run on pen and paper and sticky notes. Built by former recyclers, the platform is positioned as "the simple and secure solution for trading recyclables," matching vetted buyers and sellers across 100+ material types and handling documentation, logistics (domestic and export), payments, and quality control end to end.
The company is profitable — a rare, de-risking position at this stage — and has grown net revenue from roughly $2M to a projected $30–40M this year with a lean team of 10–12 full-time employees (plus contract/temp labor) over the last 4–5 years. Outlast has raised a Series A (backers include Forum Ventures, an early-Airbnb-employee-backed fund called Wave Capital, and AngelPad) and plans to raise a Series B opportunistically around the end of Q1 2027.
People joining now will have a direct hand in defining process, strategy, and the foundation of the company — not just executing against an existing playbook.
**About the Role** One of two Growth Specialist hires building the supply side of Outlast's B2B marketplace for scrap aluminum. The immediate focus is building supply to fill a large existing contract, then quickly expanding into supply networks beyond aluminum. The hire inherits some existing supplier relationships from the founding team but is expected to form most of their own — reporting to the VP of Finance & Business Ops.
**Responsibilities** - Source, negotiate, and buy scrap aluminum against quarterly targets across volume, price, and supplier concentration/diversification. - Run a high-volume outbound engine: build a call list nightly, work it daily, and convert cold conversations into first loads and repeat volume. - Identify, qualify, and onboard new suppliers — starting from an inherited base of existing relationships, then expanding into cold prospecting. Get on the road to visit scrapyards directly. - Get fluent fast in scrap metal grades, ISRI specifications, pricing dynamics, and the supplier landscape. - Build the first supply playbook — repeatable processes for supplier communication, order tracking, pricing records, and reporting, integrated with Outlast's platform and financial systems. - Coordinate cross-functionally with sales (specs/timing), operations (logistics/quality), and finance (pricing/margins).
**Required Skills** A. Has personally sourced, bought, or closed deals before (any industry) — negotiated directly with a counterparty through to a signed order. A doer, not just an analyst. B. Confident, comfortable talking to people cold — by phone and in person — and can hold their own in a negotiation. C. Self-starter comfortable with ambiguity — builds and follows their own process rather than needing a defined SOP, and reports results rather than asking permission.
**Bonus Skills** - Inside sales/SDR-style outbound experience (40–60 calls/day rhythm). - Experience at a marketplace or two-sided platform, especially on the supply side. - Experience with physical goods or commodity procurement (metals, chemicals, agricultural products, manufacturing inputs). - Background in scrap metal, recycling, or secondary materials. - Startup or early-stage company experience. - Comfort with AI tools, data analysis, or workflow automation.
**Logistical Info** - Location: Austin, TX — on-site strongly preferred. - Compensation: $65K–$75K base salary + quarterly performance bonus; strong performers OTE $130K–$150K/year. - Number of openings: 2 - **Other:** Travel ~30–40%, primarily Texas and the surrounding region (Southwest/Southeast possible over time, open to discussion). Not a dealbreaker if a candidate prefers to stay closer to Texas.
**Ideal Background** - 2–4 years of experience ideal — an SDR-type background looking for their next step, with real confidence talking to people, visiting in person, and cold calling. - Scrap metal/recycling background is explicitly NOT required — Outlast will teach the market; what matters is hustle, curiosity, and figuring things out without a manual. - Bonus mechanics (useful for pitching): quarterly bonus potential ~$30K, split across three metrics — volume, price, and supplier concentration (keeping any single supplier under ~5% of material) — plus new-supplier growth. Hitting 2 of 3 core targets pays out ~$20K. Quotas are not static; they shift by quarter/half-year with business needs. - Reporting line: JD is internally inconsistent — body says "VP of Finance & Business Ops," table says "VP of Finance & Operations." Still unconfirmed — ask Scott for exact title/name before finalizing candidate-facing collateral.
**Green Flags** - "Call 61 sounds like call 1" resilience — high energy, doesn't wear down from rejection. - Wants their name on a visible, public target rather than being stressed by one. - Learns fast through direct engagement (calls, site visits, market immersion) rather than needing formal training.
**Red Flags** - Needs fully defined SOPs/processes before acting — this role builds the playbook, it doesn't inherit one. - Wants to set pricing/sales strategy or manage a team — this is a hands-on IC sourcing role; pricing sits with leadership. - Firmly unwilling to travel at all, even within Texas (~30–40% travel is core to the role).
**Interview Process** 1. Phone screen — career goals, professional strengths/weaknesses, what gives/drains energy. 2. Resume/background walkthrough. 3. Functional interview — includes a mock cold call / negotiation role-play, confirmed by the client. 4. Final call with leadership for culture fit.
