The full description

**Macro** Front-End Engineer; $160K-$300K + equity; New York, NY (On-site)

**About Company** Macro is building a unified, open-source workspace that combines email, docs, tasks, and team collaboration into a single system, replacing the patchwork of tools (Slack, Notion, Linear, and similar) most startups end up piecing together. The product serves two personas: individuals replacing tools like Superhuman or Notion, and early-stage NYC/SF startups using Macro as their company operating system.

Founded in 2020, Macro is backed by a16z (Series A) and other investors. The team is roughly 15-16 people, primarily engineers (many hired out of the Recurse Center in Brooklyn), based out of Flatiron, NYC, with a small Toronto engineering presence. Macro runs its own company operations entirely on its own product.

**About the Role** This is a companion search to Macro's generalist Software Engineer role, carved out specifically for front-end/design-leaning engineers. It's more opportunistic than a fixed headcount - CTO Teo Nys will move quickly on anyone clearly excellent, even without an exact open slot.

**Responsibilities** - Build and refine the front-end of Macro's unified workspace product (email, docs, tasks, collaboration UI). - Bring strong design sensibility and taste to product surfaces, not just implementation. - Work primarily in TypeScript/React and SolidJS (Macro's core stack). - Collaborate closely with a small, product-focused engineering team in the NYC office.

**Required Skills** A. Strong front-end/design engineering background - demonstrated taste and design sensibility, not just implementation. B. Comfortable in TypeScript, ideally with React experience.

**Bonus Skills** - Experience with SolidJS (Macro's core stack). - Rust experience (signals broader engineering depth, per the CTO). - Background at companies with respected engineering/design cultures: Linear, Ramp, Attio, Notion, Figma, Cloudflare, or similar.

**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City, fully in-person, 5 days/week (not hybrid). - Compensation: $160K-$300K base + equity, scaling with experience.

**Ideal Background** - A genuinely tasteful, well-executed personal website is one of the strongest signals for this role (CTO's example: an engineer named Seamus has a simple, well-done personal site). - GitHub or portfolio showing real design/front-end craft, not just tutorial-following.

**Green Flags** - Visible taste and design opinion, demonstrated through personal work. - Comfortable being evaluated more on portfolio/website quality than a traditional resume.

**Red Flags** - Over-designed/gimmicky personal sites (AI-vibe-coded, all flash no substance) - same signal as the generalist role, arguably more relevant here. - Implementation-only front-end background with no evidence of design taste or opinion. - Currently at, or recently graduated from, the Recurse Center - HARD EXCLUSION per Teo (9/2026): client has a separate direct arrangement with Recurse and cannot overlap with it. Do not submit Recurse alumni/current batch members, even though Macro's own team is heavily Recurse-pedigreed. - Personal site or portfolio link that's down, broken, or inaccessible when reviewed. - Recurse Center alumni - client has a separate, direct arrangement with Recurse Center and does not want overlapping candidates sourced through Squad.

**Interview Process** 1. Phone screen with CTO Teo Nys. 2. On-site in the NY office - conversational, portfolio/project deep-dive rather than coding questions. 3. [Optional] Paid work trial (2-5 days, ideally a full week) - $3,000 for a 5-day trial, pro-rated for shorter engagements. Only when deemed necessary and possible
