The full description
**Soxton** Founding Engineer; $125K–$220K base + equity; New York City (Hybrid)
**About Company** Soxton is an AI-native law firm ($2.5M pre-seed led by Moxxie Ventures) providing flat-fee outside general counsel to startups and tech-enabled businesses, from incorporation through Series A. Rather than building software for lawyers, Soxton is building a company that changes how clients interact with lawyers — pairing in-house attorneys with AI-driven workflows to serve startups faster and at lower cost than a traditional firm.
Founded by Logan Brown (Harvard Law, Marshall Scholar, formerly Cooley, where she helped open the Miami office) alongside co-founder Asher Lanzone, who leads engineering. The company launched publicly in December 2025 and has grown to serve 1,000+ client companies.
**About the Role** As a Founding Engineer, you'll join Logan and Asher as one of Soxton's first engineering hires, working directly with the firm's startup attorneys to turn recurring legal work into new products, AI agents, and automated workflows. This is a true zero-to-one seat — your work will directly shape how legal services are delivered to thousands of startups, and you'll own real infrastructure and product decisions from day one.
**Responsibilities** - Design and iterate on the core Soxton product used by startups and attorneys to draft legal documents and run AI legal workflows - Ship quickly, iterating based on direct feedback from senior startup attorneys and real client usage patterns - Ideate and build MVPs of new legal-tech product bets - Own infrastructure, architecture, and technical decisions as an early member of the team - Work across the stack as needed — no fixed lane between frontend, backend, and AI/ML work
**Required Skills** A. 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, in startup and/or big tech environments B. Strong full-stack engineering background — production experience building modern web applications (Next.js/TypeScript) and/or AI agents/LLM-based systems C. Working proficiency in Python D. Comfortable owning infrastructure, architecture, and technical decisions independently in an unstructured, fast-moving environment
**Bonus Skills** - Prior experience as a founding or early engineer at a startup - Familiarity with Supabase and Vercel - Hands-on experience building LLM-powered products or AI agents specifically - Legal, compliance, or legal-tech background
**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City (Soho) — 3+ days/week in office - Compensation: $125K–$220K base + equity, depending on experience - Number of openings: 2 - **Other:** Full-time; general availability expected on weekends as needed Immediate start preferred Office is a converted art gallery with a panini press and espresso machine Optional short paid trial period for candidates who are able to do one
**Ideal Background** - Multi-year (2–3+ year) tenure as a founding/early engineer at a real startup is the strongest signal — reads as legitimate ownership. A few months in "stealth" is fine; ~2 years in stealth with no verifiable detail is a pass for this client. - Comfortable being one of the first engineers on a 2–3 person team and doing "a little bit of everything" — DevOps, backend, frontend, AI/ML — rather than a narrow specialist lane. - Big-tech-only backgrounds are fine if the candidate is genuinely willing to adapt to startup pace/ambiguity — client isn't looking for "a bunch of Google engineers" with zero startup exposure. - Purely academic/research ML backgrounds are a stretch fit unless the candidate explicitly wants to also own web/backend work. - Legal background/context is a nice reason to get a conversation, but client says it doesn't move the needle as much as you'd expect — bonus signal, not a differentiator alone. - Currently-unemployed candidates are not a red flag here — it's specifically what the optional short paid trial is meant to de-risk. - Comp note: advertised range is $125K–$220K, but client agreed on the 8/25 call to flex to $250K base for a clearly exceptional candidate. Don't filter out strong candidates at $220K–$250K, but don't advertise $250K as the standard band. - Process note: for candidates who need to move fast, client is open to combining the technical interview and on-site into a single morning.
**Green Flags** - Multi-year founding/early-startup engineer experience, not just a title - Full-stack builder who's also comfortable with AI/ML/agent work (or vice versa) — no hard specialization required - High ownership, low ego, thrives in unstructured environments - Doesn't take themselves too seriously — sense of humor is a real, explicitly-valued signal for this in-office, shoulder-to-shoulder team - Open to a short paid trial if between roles/available
**Red Flags** - Long unverifiable "stealth" stints (~2 years) with no detail on what was built - Purely academic/research ML background with no interest in full-stack or web ownership - Comp expectations meaningfully above $220K base without a clearly standout profile - New-grad / <2 years experience candidates — client wants real-world track record for these first two hires - Unable or unwilling to be in the Soho office 3+ days/week
**Interview Process** 1. Intro conversation with one Soxton co-founder (Asher or Logan) 2. Follow-up intro conversation with the other co-founder 3. Technical interview — scope depends on seniority, virtual or in-person 4. Half-day on-site (morning + lunch) building a small project together with the team 5. Optional short paid trial period for candidates who are able to do one
