What we're looking for:
We need an experienced attorney with 7+ years of experience in eminent domain, real estate litigation, or public entity land acquisition litigation who can run condemnation cases end-to-end for public agency clients. You should be comfortable managing all phases of litigation — from valuation strategy and expert coordination through trial — and have a track record of handling complex matters independently. Complex litigation experience is strongly preferred, and bonus points if you have prior government or transportation agency experience (Caltrans, Metro, port authorities) or CEQA/land use litigation crossover.
What you'll do:
- Lead eminent domain and inverse condemnation cases for public agency clients including transportation agencies, water districts, cities, and counties - Drive valuation strategy by working with appraisers, engineers, and economists — developing and challenging expert testimony on highest-and-best use, severance damages, business goodwill, and just compensation - Manage all phases of litigation including pleadings, discovery, depositions, law-and-motion, settlement negotiations, trial, and appeals - Handle related litigation matters such as precondemnation conduct claims, regulatory takings, physical takings, and constitutional challenges - Counsel public agency clients on right-of-way acquisition disputes and pre-litigation strategy - Collaborate cross-office on statewide matters and mentor associates within the Trial & Litigation group
About the role:
- Of Counsel title with real autonomy — you'll own cases and client relationships, not babysit partners - 1,850 billable hour target with hybrid schedule (2-3 days/week in office) - Choice of office: San Diego, Los Angeles, or Oakland - Active California bar admission required - Transcript and writing sample required at submission
