The full description
**Outlast** Accounting & Controls Manager; $150K–$185K base + equity; New York City, NY (On-site)
**About Company** Outlast operates a marketplace and technology platform for the scrap metal and bulk recyclables industry — a trillion-dollar market still largely run on pen and paper and sticky notes. Built by former recyclers, the platform is positioned as "the simple and secure solution for trading recyclables," matching vetted buyers and sellers across 100+ material types and handling documentation, logistics (domestic and export), payments, and quality control end to end.
The company is profitable — a rare, de-risking position at this stage — and has grown net revenue from roughly $2M to a projected $30–40M this year with a lean team of 10–12 full-time employees (plus contract/temp labor) over the last 4–5 years. Outlast has raised a Series A (backers include Forum Ventures, an early-Airbnb-employee-backed fund called Wave Capital, and AngelPad) and plans to raise a Series B opportunistically around the end of Q1 2027.
People joining now will have a direct hand in defining process, strategy, and the foundation of the company — not just executing against an existing playbook.
**About the Role** Outlast needs someone to own its books end-to-end and grow into the Controller seat as the company roughly doubles in size. This person runs the monthly close, keeps the day-to-day transactional engine clean, owns inventory accounting for physical metal, manages cash and credit-facility reporting, and builds the control environment the company needs before its first audit, not after. They report directly to Scott Moyer, VP of Finance & Operations, and partner closely with the Finance & Strategy Manager — that role owns the forecast/model, this role produces the reconciled actuals everything else is built on.
**Responsibilities** - Own the monthly close end-to-end — close calendar, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and flux review — and deliver reconciled financial statements on a fixed timeline every month. - Keep the books clean day to day: AP/AR workflows, bill processing, billing and cash application, and expense management, with hands-on bookkeeping when it's needed. - Own inventory accounting for physical metal — cost per pound, inventory GL integrity, and reconciliation between the operating platform and the ledger. - Manage cash and lender reporting — reconcile bank accounts monthly, monitor daily cash activity, and prepare the weekly borrowing base certificate for the credit facility. - Run payroll, benefits, and tax accounting in partnership with HR, and coordinate tax filings and compliance across jurisdictions. - Build the control environment — accounting policies, approval thresholds, segregation of duties — and act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and banks. - Run and improve the accounting systems (QuickBooks Online, Ramp, bill-pay integrations) and lead the eventual ERP evaluation/migration; supervise and extend the existing AI agent stack that automates a growing share of AP/AR/close work.
**Required Skills** A. 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, including full ownership of a monthly close — calendar, entries, reconciliations, and the deadline. Candidates with 6+ years are fine to pursue if genuinely interested; 10+ years is likely not the right fit unless they have real startup experience and understand what that entails. B. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. C. Real, applied GAAP and controls knowledge — accruals, cutoffs, revenue recognition, inventory/COGS accounting, and internal controls — without needing to look them up, and can explain them to a non-accountant. D. Deep QuickBooks Online (or equivalent ERP) skills, plus comfort with integrated fintech stacks like Ramp and bill-pay tools.
**Bonus Skills** - CPA or CFA strongly preferred. - Inventory, manufacturing, commodities, or distribution accounting experience. - Asset-based lending or borrowing-base reporting experience. - Public accounting (audit) foundation before moving into industry. - ERP evaluation, implementation, or migration experience. - Hands-on use of AI tools in accounting workflows.
**Logistical Info** - Location: New York City, NY (on-site). Starting with NYC candidates; may expand to Salt Lake City or Austin if the candidate pool isn't right there. - Compensation: $150K–$185K base + equity - **Other:** U.S. work authorization is required (visa sponsorship not available).
**Ideal Background** - Genuinely excited about the stepping-stone-to-Controller path — comfortable staying hands-on (bookkeeping, journal entries, chasing vendor bills) even as scope grows, not looking to move straight into a pure oversight/review seat. - 4–6 years is the client's stated sweet spot; 6+ years is fine to submit if the candidate is genuinely interested, but 10+ years is a likely pass unless they have real startup experience. - Comp note: $150K–$185K base + equity is the confirmed range direct from the client (not a placeholder).
**Green Flags** - Has owned a full monthly close independently, start to finish, on a fixed deadline. - Comfortable being "in the ledger" day to day, not just reviewing others' work — will post a journal entry or chase a vendor bill personally. - Has evaluated, implemented, or migrated an ERP system. - Public accounting/audit background before moving into industry.
**Red Flags** - Only comfortable reviewing others' work from a distance — not willing to do hands-on bookkeeping. - 10+ years of experience without meaningful startup experience. - No experience owning a close independently (has only supported/assisted one).
**Interview Process** 1. Phone screen (~20–30 min). 2. Resume walkthrough (~1 hour). 3. Functional interview (~1 hour) — includes a technical exercise (e.g., a close/reconciliation test). For NYC-based candidates, this round will be conducted in person. 4. Final culture-fit call (~1 hour).
